El congreso inaugural tenía, como propósito central, despertar reflexiones y debates sobre cómo re/teorizar el patrimonio. El encuentro fue organizado, en esta ocasión, por el Grupo de Estudios de Patrimonio de la Universidad de Gotemburgo, en colaboración con la revista International Journal of Heritage Studies.
