description The fault and fracture processes in structures continue being a challenging problem in Mechanics. For this reason they must be taken into account in the security analysis of the structures. In addition they play a very important role in the development of new materials, as much for the knowledge of their durability as for their resistance. It is not only possible to obtain the fracture parameters but also to characterize the fissure subcritical propagation of solids through many methodologies of analysis, both analytic and numerical ones. But when it is desired to determine the fracture parameters and the fracture configuration considering the unstable propagation of fissures, the problem is far from being trivial. In the simulation of the unstable propagation of a fault, the classical methods like the Finite Element Method (FEM) or the Boundary Element Method (BEM) present difficulties because they are based on the hypothesis of the continuous means. In this context the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is presented as an efficient alternative for the study of this kind of problems. The DEM consists of representing the continuum as a regular arrangement of reticulate bars where they have a rigidity equivalent to the part of the continuum they intend to represent. The mass is discrete and concentrated in the nodes that join the bars, which have a constitutive relation related with the fracture energy of the modeled material. The resulting movement equation is integrated in time with an algorism of explicit integration. This process can very easily represent the fracture and/or propagation processes. In this work are, in the first place, presented examples of how to obtain static fracture parameters. Secondly, various problems in 2 and 3 dimensions about the calculus of the intensity factors of dynamic tension. And finally, the fissure unstable propagation is reproduced compared with the solutions presented by other authors. With these examples the capacity of the MED is demonstrated to obtain the static and dynamic FIT in addition to the speed and direction of the propagation of fissures and configurations of breakage.
