It also provided residents with a greater sense of security regarding the threat of eviction. Drawing on research conducted in public agency archives, Light’s own records, contemporary press coverage, and interviews with two engineers involved in the program, this paper seeks to briefly analyze the history of energy provision in the favelas and examine the implementation of the electrification initiative. It further aims to explore the various political impacts that arose from the program. The historical analysis offers valuable insights for rethinking how public services can be managed in favelas, contributing to the development of more democratic and equitable models of regulation and governance. El programa de electrificación de las favelas de Rio de Janeiro del fin de los años 1970 fue la primera intervención a gran escala para implementar un servicio público en estos espacios y brindó a los residentes una mayor sensación de seguridad respecto de los riesgos de expulsión. A partir de una investigación en archivos de organismos públicos y de la propia empresa Light, en la prensa de laépoca y de entrevistas con dos ingenieros del programa, el presente trabajo pretende analizar brevemente la historia del servicio de energía en las favelas y comprender la implementación del mencionado programa, entendiendo los diversos impactos políticos a que este programa dio lugar. El análisis histórico del programa aporta elementos importantes para pensar en nuevas formas de gestionar los servicios públicos en las favelas en la búsqueda de nuevos arreglos para gestionar y regular tales servicios de forma más democrática y justa. O programa de eletrificação das favelas do Rio de Janeiro, no final da década de 1970, foi a primeira intervenção em larga escala para implementar um serviço público nesses espaços e deu aos moradores uma maior sensação de segurança em relação aos riscos de despejo. Com base em pesquisas em arquivos de órgãos públicos e da própria Light, na imprensa da época e em entrevistascom dois engenheiros do programa, este artigo tem como objetivo analisar brevemente a história do serviço de energia nas favelas e entender a implementação do programa, compreendendo os diversos impactos políticos que esse programa gerou. A análise histórica do programa fornece elementos importantes para se pensar em novas formas de gestão dos serviços públicos nas favelas, na busca de novos arranjos para gerenciar e regular esses serviços de forma mais democrática e justa.
