Sumario:Urban growth increases the demand for water and generates impacts on water resources, pressing on the supply and sanitation systems of municipalities. The objectives of this article are to comprehend water management in the cities of the Lower Basin of the Chubut River and its environmental implications, and to identify the challenges, in order to develop recommendations that allow the transition to integrated water resources management. In order to achieve these aims, surveys and interviews with the representatives of five water and sanitation managements and the provincial environmental management department were conducted, obtaining data related to urbanization, sustainability and water consumption. The challenges encountered refer to the need to manage at the basin scale, improve infrastructure, get more financing and implement environmental education activities to raise awareness about the use of the resource, and for the projection of sustainable development.
