The objectives of this article are to comprehend water management in the cities of the Lower Basin of the Chubut River and its environmental implications, and to identify the challenges, in order to develop recommendations that allow the transition to integrated water resources management. In order to achieve these aims, surveys and interviews with the representatives of five water and sanitation managements and the provincial environmental management department were conducted, obtaining data related to urbanization, sustainability and water consumption. The challenges encountered refer to the need to manage at the basin scale, improve infrastructure, get more financing and implement environmental education activities to raise awareness about the use of the resource, and for the projection of sustainable development. El crecimiento urbano incrementa la demanda de agua y produce impactos sobre los recursos hídricos, generando presiones sobre los sistemas de provisión y saneamiento de los municipios. El presente artículo tiene por objetivos conocer la gestión del agua en las ciudades de la Cuenca Inferior del Río Chubut y sus implicancias ambientales, e identificar los desafíos, en pos de elaborar recomendaciones que permitan transitar hacia una gestión integrada del recurso hídrico. Para ello se realizaron encuestas y entrevistas a los representantes de cinco gerencias de agua y saneamiento y a la dirección de gestión ambiental provincial, y se obtuvieron datos vinculados con urbanización, sustentabilidad y consumo de agua. Los desafíos se vinculan con la necesidad de gestionar a escala de cuenca, contar con mejor infraestructura, mayor financiamiento e implementar actividades de educación ambiental para concientizar acerca de la utilización del recurso, y para la proyección del desarrollo sustentable. O crescimento urbano aumenta a demanda por água e produz impactos nos recursos hídricos, gerando pressão nos sistemas de abastecimento e saneamento dos municípios. Os objetivos deste artigo são compreender a gestão da água nas cidades da Bacia Inferior do Rio Chubut e suas implicações ambientais, e identificar os desafios, a fim de desenvolver recomendações que permitamavançar para uma gestão integrada dos recursos hídricos. Para o efeito, foram realizados inquéritos e entrevistas aos representantes dos cinco departamentos de água e saneamento e do departamento provincial de gestão ambiental, e foram obtidos dados ligados à urbanização, sustentabilidade e consumo de água. Os desafios estão ligados à necessidade de gerir à escala da bacia, ter melhores infra-estruturas, maior financiamento e implementar actividades de educação ambiental para sensibilizar para o uso do recurso e para a projecção do desenvolvimento sustentável.
