Br. is the third most diverse genus within the Cyperaceae family, one of the four major plants families in Paraguay. The aim of this study was to characterize Eleocharis species according to their habitat, differentiate the types of humid environments they inhabit, and to map their distribution in Paraguay and neighboring regions. The species database compiled from using field collections and the study of specimens deposited in different herbaria. Ecological descriptions were made in situ and extracted from herbarium specimen labels. Distribution maps were generated using R software, and the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) coordinate reference system was applied. Shapefiles representing the administrative boundaries of the three countries bordering Paraguay were obtained from The Data Humanitarian Exchange website. A total of 33 species, one subspecies, and one variety were recorded in four types of habitats; aquatic rooted on sandy substrate: seven species, one subspecies, and one variety; amphibious rooted on sandy substrate: 18 species; amphibious rooted on clay substrate: seven species; and strictly aquatic: one species. Of the total number of species, four are endemic to Paraguay. El género Eleocharis R. Br., es el tercero en diversidad de riqueza dentro de la familia Cyperaceae, una de las cuatro principales del Paraguay. El objetivo del trabajo fue caracterizar a las especies de Eleocharis según los tipos de ambientes húmedos en los que habitan y mapear la distribución de las mismas en Paraguay y en las regiones limítrofes. La base de datos de las especies se realizó con las colectas de campo y el estudio de material depositado en diferentes herbarios. Las descripciones ecológicas fueron realizadas in situ y extraídas de las etiquetas de los especímenes de herbario. Para la confección de mapas se utilizó el software R y se utilizó el Sistema de Referencias de Coordenadas World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). Los “shapefiles” que muestran los límites administrativos de los tres países limítrofes con el Paraguay se obtuvieron del sitio WEB The Data Humanitarian Exchange. Se encontraron en total 33 especies, una subespecie y una variedad en cuatro tipos de hábitats: acuáticas radicantes sobre sustrato arenoso con siete especies, una subespecie y una variedad; anfibias radicantes sobre sustrato arenoso con 18 especies; anfibias radicantes sobre sustrato arcilloso con siete especies; y acuáticas estrictas, con una especie. Del total de las especies cuatro son endémicas de Paraguay.
