Due to their hightransmissibility and zoonotic potential, they represent an important public health concern. The objectiveof this study was to detect the presence of dermatophytes in public spaces commonly shared by humansand animals, such as squares and parks in the city of La Plata, Argentina. A total of 72 soil samples werecollected. Fungal identification was performed based on macromorphological and micromorphologicalcharacteristics, and the pH of each sample was also determined. Of the ten sampled public sites, seventested positives for dermatophytes. This finding confirmed the presence of organic matter and identifiedthe pH range favorable for fungal growth in several of the sampled areas. Individuals who choose to livewith companion animals must commit to ensuring animal health and welfare, as well as implementingenvironmental hygiene and preventive practices. Identifying the species responsible for dermatophytosisprovides valuable insight into the risk factors associated with zoonotic superficial mycoses and supportsfuture epidemiological surveillance efforts.
