Sumario:This paper presents an account of the different aspects of vegetation dynamics occurring on the alluvial plain of the Paraná River. Some processes are cyclic, while others are unidirectional. Models are provided for plant succession on sandbanks and in different types of ponds and cul-de-sacs. The culmination of the process appears to be the establishment of the insular forest, which is considered a subclimax, although the possibility of Panicum prionitis tall grassland as the endpoint of plant succession in certain parts of the alluvial plain is also discussed.
