The logic of form: sustainability parameter in structural design

Teaching structures in architecture presents several challenges. This is because structural andconstructive design is often considered separate from architectural design. This presentationexplores two significant academic discourses. One by Eduardo Torroja in 1960 and another byManuel Elices Calafat...

This is because structural andconstructive design is often considered separate from architectural design. This presentationexplores two significant academic discourses. One by Eduardo Torroja in 1960 and another byManuel Elices Calafat in 2004, which address the relationship between Form, Structure, andMaterial. Torroja analyzes how materials have historically determined the logic of structural form, while Elices Calafat anticipates a future where form can dictate material thanks to the development ofcomposite and intelligent materials. In a context of rapid changes, accentuated by the advancementof artificial intelligence, this presentation proposes a pedagogical approach to teaching structuraldesign that emphasizes understanding the tensional phenomenon and provides tools to adapt toinnovations with critical thinking and environmental awareness.
