Sumario:Urban theory is a field that has not been exempt to the increasing popularity of environmental issues in recent decades. The concept of sustainable city or eco-city has permeated both academic and political spheres, giving rise to multiple conceptualizations and urban sustainability projects in territories that often end in ambiguities and, at best, inefficient outcomes. This work, resulting from a doctoral research, delves into this debate to contribute to the delineation of the concept of sustainable city. Through a qualitative methodology based on bibliographic and documentary analysis, it is concluded that the sustainable city is one that achieves the well-being goals in urban life set by each society, within the safe limits of the ecological footprint, as defined by the level of sustainable ecological footprint per capita globally.
