The concept of sustainable city or eco-city has permeated both academic and political spheres, giving rise to multiple conceptualizations and urban sustainability projects in territories that often end in ambiguities and, at best, inefficient outcomes. This work, resulting from a doctoral research, delves into this debate to contribute to the delineation of the concept of sustainable city. Through a qualitative methodology based on bibliographic and documentary analysis, it is concluded that the sustainable city is one that achieves the well-being goals in urban life set by each society, within the safe limits of the ecological footprint, as defined by the level of sustainable ecological footprint per capita globally. La teoría urbana es un campo que no ha estado exento de la popularidad que en las últimas décadas ha tomado la cuestión ambiental. La idea de ciudad sostenible o eco-city ha permeado el ámbito académico y político, proliferando múltiples conceptualizaciones y proyectos de sostenibilidad urbana en los territorios que terminan en ambigüedades y resultados, en el mejor de los casos, ineficientes. Este trabajo, resultado de una investigación doctoral, se sumerge en este debate a fin de contribuir en la delimitación del concepto de ciudad sostenible. A partir de una metodología de tipo cualitativa basada en el análisis bibliográfico y documental, se concluye que la ciudad sostenible es aquella que logra los objetivos de bienestar en la vida urbana que cada sociedad se trace, dentro de los límites seguros en el nivel de huella ecológica, definidos por el nivel de huella ecológica sostenible per cápita a nivel global. A teoria urbana é um campo que não tem estado imune à crescente popularidade das questões ambientais nas últimas décadas. A ideia de cidade sustentável ou eco-cidade tem permeado tanto o meio acadêmico quanto político, dando origem a múltiplas conceitualizações e projetos de sustentabilidade urbana em territórios que frequentemente resultam em ambiguidades e, no melhor dos casos, em resultados ineficientes. Este trabalho, resultante de uma pesquisa de doutorado, mergulha nesse debate para contribuir para a delimitação do conceito de cidade sustentável. Através de uma metodologia qualitativa baseada na análise bibliográfica e documental, conclui-se que a cidade sustentável é aquela que alcança os objetivos de bem-estar na vida urbana estabelecidos por cada sociedade, dentro dos limites seguros da pegada ecológica, definido pelo nível de pegada ecológica sustentável per capita globalmente.
