This particular story is selected for its characteristics as a miniature novel, rich in characters and vicissitudes. The author's compositional resources are reviewed, in terms of the general structure, the traditional models used, the general theme of the story, referring to loyalty (according to chivalric models). Finally, the analysis is extended to other themes present in the apologue, that is, the story told by Patronio, such as the hermeneutic activity proposed by the author and the difficulty in capturing the intention behind the words and the facts. All this accounts for the semantic density of a text that, at first reading, seems plain and simple, a mere instrument for the teachings that the author wants to communicate. El trabajo propone un análisis de la escritura narrativa didáctico-ejemplar de don Juan Manuel enfocándose en un solo enxemplo de su obra más famosa. Se elige ese relato por constituir una suerte de novela en miniatura, muy rica en personajes y vicisitudes. Se pasa revista a los recursos compositivos del autor, en cuanto a la estructura general, los modelos tradicionales utilizados, la temática general del relato, referida a la lealtad, de acuerdo con modelos caballerescos. Finalmente, se amplía el análisis a otros temas presentes en el apólogo, es decir, el relato en boca de Patronio, tales como la actividad hermenéutica que el autor propone y la dificultad para captar la intención detrás de las palabras y de los hechos. Todo esto da cuenta de la densidad semántica de un texto que, en una primera lectura, parece llano y simple, mero instrumento para las enseñanzas que el autor quiere comunicar.
