This relationship is framed by vaious forms of warfare that precede and follow their interactions. Individual issues intersect with collective ones, which serve as a pretext or justification for the war. Through this portrayal, the novel offers a rather negative image of war in the 13th century, connected to the construction of a dark, crude and realistic Middle Ages, and seeks to highlight and raise awareness of the historical antecedents that underpin a present-day prosperity built on bloodshed, violence and exclusion.
