Soil water organic matter soil Agua de suelo materia orgánica suelo Service crops (SC), also known as cover crops or green manure, are plants grown with the purpose of providing ecosystem benefits or services, without the intention of being harvested. These crops offer a wide range of services, such as soil coverage, organic matter contribution, weed population dynamics reduction, as well as chemical, physical, and biological soil improvements. In the last ten years in Argentina, it was observed a significant increase in the use of these crops, with variable results depending on the species used and the goals sought. The objective was to evaluate the inclusion of winter service crops with respect to soil water availability, biomass production, and aerial coverage as potential benefits for agricultural production in Corrientes. A trial was carried out at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at UNNE. Vetch, oats, and forage turnip were used as service crops. The presence of weeds and insect pests was also observed. Seventy-seven days after sowing, differences in biomass among the three species were observed. Oat production was the highest followed by vetch and turnip. The crop with the highest average coverage was vetch, followed by oat and turnip. Oat and vetch accumulated more water throughout the cycle. Both oat and vetch crops provided ecosystem services favorably.
