Her reflections show the examination of how Republicans have become the different, and how they must flee outside Spain to avoid the destruction of a community identity based on freedom as a political maxim. Through the analysis of her words, the need of the individual to continue fighting for his ideals, even after defeat, teaches us the value of personal ethics in spite of the constraints imposed by reality. Este trabajo pretende mostrar la interrelación que presentan la otredad y el final de la Guerra Civil española en torno al concepto de libertad dentro de las memorias de Isabel Oyarzábal Smith, tituladas He de tener libertad (1940). Sus reflexiones muestran el examen de cómo los republicanos se han convertido en el diferente, y deben huir fuera de España para evitar la destrucción de una identidad comunitaria basada en la libertad como máxima política. A través del análisis de sus palabras, la necesidad del individuo de seguir luchando por sus ideales incluso tras la derrota nos enseña el valor de la ética personal frente a los condicionantes impuestos por la realidad.
