The analysis is based on its historical background, the geopolitical framework of the strategy of “Marcha hacia el Oeste” and “Fronteras Vivas”, the Itaipú binational project and the aspect linked to land tenure. The context of the link between the two countries built by authoritarian military regimes in the framework of the Cold War is considered. This bond of dependency of Paraguay towards Brazil has largely determined the Paraguayan economic model in force to this day. It is considered that the change in Brazilian foreign policy could be reflected in a more equitable bilateral relationship. El objetivo de este artículo es el análisis de los aspectos que definieron la relación entre Paraguay y Brasil desde mediados del siglo pasado. El análisis se basa en sus antecedentes históricos, el marco geopolítico de la estrategia de “Marcha hacia el Oeste” y “Fronteras Vivas”, el proyecto binacional Itaipú y el aspecto vinculado a la tenencia de la tierra. Se considera el contexto del vínculo entre ambos países construido por regímenes militares autoritarios en el marco de la Guerra Fría. Este lazo de dependencia de Paraguay hacia Brasil ha determinado en gran medida el modelo económico paraguayo vigente hasta el día de hoy. Se considera que el cambio en la política exterior brasileña podría reflejarse en una relación bilateral más equitativa.
