description The use of human teeth as didactic material for dental teaching has always been fundamental, so there is a great demand for them in the training of dentistry students. The aim of this study was to determine the number of teeth used in the teaching-learning process in the dental schools of Paraguay in 2019. A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out by means of a semi-structured questionnaire sent by e-mail to the Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) of Paraguay in the public and private sector that have dental careers authorized by the Consejo Nacional de Educación Superior. A response rate of 77.78% (n= 14) was obtained. 86% of the institutions (n=12) mentioned using extracted human teeth for research and 100% used them for preclinical undergraduate teaching. A total of 11,211 teeth were used for undergraduate preclinical teaching in 2019. It was found out that Endodontics, the subject in the third year of the career, was the area that most frequently used extracted human teeth among all the IESs. All the IESs surveyed in Paraguay requested extracted human teeth for undergraduate teaching courses. It was found out that the number of human teeth used was high. This work made it possible to measure the use of extracted human teeth in the training of dentistry students and to demonstrate the need to establish ethical and legal mechanisms to obtain them and the implementation of alternatives to natural teeth.
