Proposing new uses for an existing construction system implied an innovation in the use of construction technology. On the one hand, the design obtained is the result of a university research and extension activity, which involves the Technology Area and the Project Area. On the other hand, such equipment is the product of a creative process in which teachers and students participated, which constitutes an exploration of new teaching modalities. The article develops the process followed in the experience, presents and comments on the results obtained and reflects on the activity performed. Este artículo presenta una experiencia académica, desarrollada por un taller de proyectos de la carrera de Arquitectura, consistente en el diseño y la construcción de un prototipo de equipamiento para el espacio público, realizado mediante el sistema Steel framing. Al proponer nuevos usos para un sistema constructivo existente, este trabajo implicó una innovación en el uso de una tecnología constructiva. Por un lado, el diseño obtenido es el resultado de una actividad universitaria de investigación y extensión en el medio, que involucra el Área Tecnología y el Área Proyectual. Por otro lado, dicho equipamiento es el producto de un proceso creativoen el que participaron docentes yestudiantes, lo que constituye una exploración en nuevas modalidades de enseñanza. En el artículo se desarrolla el proceso seguido en el trabajo, se presentan y comentan los resultados obtenidos y se reflexiona sobre la actividad realizada.
