description Relative prevalence of mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis has been increasing over time, both nationally and internationally. S. uberis has been described as an environmental mastitis causal, although it is considered potentially contagious. The terms “well-adapted strains” or “poorly adapted strains” to the host are used to refer to contagious or environmental strains, respectively. The molecular techniques incorporation has made it possible to characterize S. uberis genetic profiles as virulence factors associated with its pathogenicity. The SUAM and pauA genes showed a high degree of conservation and immunogenicity. Although various reservoirs of S. uberis have been identified in the environment, mastitis due to S. uberis must be prevented both by reducing environmental exposure and transmission linked to milking. In general, clinical cases are treated during lactation, while subclinical mastitis is preferably treated at drying off. It has been shown that, by using extended therapy for 5-8 days, significantly better results are achieved in terms of bacteriological cure. There are reports of antimicrobial resistance and although the levels found for beta-lactams, fluoro-quinolones and macrolides are relatively low, to date an increase in the resistance of S. uberis to tetracyclines has been detected, reaching moderate to high levels.
