Towards the end of the 20th century, the crisis in livestock farming and the rise of the mining activity, since the 1990s, have generated a dynamic that is manifested in a process of urban and demographic growth linked to migratory movements. In this paper, based on the transformations of socioeconomic structures, we propose to analyze the geographic position and urban growth of Puerto San Julián, by means of a comparative approach of historical and current records, the aim is to determine what the socioeconomic structures were and to whatextent they influenced the geographic situation and urban growth. Methodologically, it carried out a compilation and bibliography analysis of scientific, technical, historical and geographical documents, also analysis of statistical information from the National Population Census. Likewise, plans and historical aerial photographs and satellite images from different dates were interpreted andanalyzed in order to generate thematic cartography, by means of a Geographic Information System.As a result, three stages of growth were identified, linked to economic and demographic dynamics. In conclusion, the socioeconomic dynamics of Puerto San Julián influenced the development of the city in the different stages. Puerto San Julián es una ciudad pequeña con una historia relevante para la Patagonia, que surge a principios del siglo XX como un asentamiento relacionado con la explotación ganadera de la región y por varias décadas su población urbana fue escasa. Hacia fines del siglo XX, la crisis de la ganadería y el auge de la actividad minera, a partir de la década de 1990, generan una dinámica que se manifiesta en un proceso de crecimiento urbano y demográfico vinculados a movimientos migratorios. En este trabajo, a partir de las transformaciones de las estructuras socioeconómicas, se propone analizar la posición geográfica y el crecimiento urbano de Puerto San Julián, mediante una aproximación comparativa de los registros históricos y actuales se procura determinar cuáles fueron, y en qué medida incidieron, las estructuras socioeconómicas en la situación geográfica y en el crecimiento urbano. Desde lo metodológico, se realizó una recopilación y análisis bibliográfico de documentos científicos, técnicos, históricos y geográficos, también información estadística provenientes de los Censos Nacionales de Población. Asimismo, se analizaron planos y fotografías aéreas históricas e imágenes satelitales de diferentes fechas, con el fin de generar cartografía temática en un Sistema de Información Geográfica. Como resultado, se identificaron tres etapas de crecimiento, vinculadas a la dinámica económica y demográfica. A modo de conclusión, la dinámica socioeconómica de Puerto San Julián influyó en el desarrollo de la ciudad en las distintas etapas.
