Sumario:The article analyzes the social participation of parents as a key process to exercise the right to education and a way to democratize the educational process. We conducted: (a) a conceptual approach to social participation and, (b) we looked at the studies that addressed the issue in the educational field. Subsequently, we addressed a brief historical revision of the participation of parents to highlight their role in basic education in Mexico. In addition, we examined the main government policies designed to incorporate parents' voices, their expectations, and, in general, their relationship with education and school, based on immersion in a specific context and environment. Finally, some recommendations are established to promote and strengthen the participation of these sectors in the educational field.
