Subsequently, we addressed a brief historical revision of the participation of parents to highlight their role in basic education in Mexico. In addition, we examined the main government policies designed to incorporate parents' voices, their expectations, and, in general, their relationship with education and school, based on immersion in a specific context and environment. Finally, some recommendations are established to promote and strengthen the participation of these sectors in the educational field. El artículo analiza la participación social de los padres de familia como proceso clave para ejercer el derecho a la educación y una forma de democratizar el proceso educativo. Para ello, se realiza una aproximación conceptual de la participación social y una mirada a los estudios que han abordado el tema en el ámbito educativo. Posteriormente, se efectúa un breve recuento histórico de la participación de los padres de familia para destacar el papel de dichos sujetos en la educación básica en México. Además, se examinan las principales políticas gubernamentales diseñadas para incorporar sus voces, sus expectativas y, en general, su relación con la educación y la escuela, a partir de la inmersión en un contexto y ambiente específico. Finalmente, se establecen algunas recomendaciones para impulsar y fortalecer la participación de dichos sectores en el ámbito educativo.
