Their distribution in the different kingdoms is compiled and updated. The main criteria for their recognition are provided and discussed, from basic morphology and behaviour (ascertained by light microscopy) to a more precise characterization by means of immunofluorescence techniques and ultrastructural studies. The two modes of meiosis (pre- and post-reductional) encountered in holokinetic systems are described as well as other topics related to the meiotic process. The principal mechanisms of karyotype evolution (fusion/simploidy, fragmentation/agmatoploidy, translocation, poliploidy) and their occurrence and frequency in the different taxa are summarized.
