Sumario: | The performance (neutron yield, X-ray production, etc.) of plasma focus discharges series fluctuates strongly when performed with fixed experimental conditions. Previous work suggests that these fluctuations are due to a deterministic 'internal' dynamics involving degrees of freedom not controlled by the operator, possibly related to adsorption and desorption of impurities from the electrodes. According to this dynamics the yield of a discharge depends on the outcome of the previous ones. We study eight series of discharges in three different facilities, with various electrode materials and operating conditions. More evidence of a deterministic internal dynamics is found. The fluctuation pattern depends on the electrode materials and other characteristics of the experiment. A heuristic mathematical model that describes adsorption and desorption of impurities from the electrodes and their consequences on the yield is presented. The model predicts steady yield or periodic and chaotic fluctuations, depending on parameters related to the experimental conditions. © 1993. |
