Intraspecific floral variability of passiflora species in Argentina

Intraspecific flower variation was recorded for several Passiflora species growing naturally in different habitats of Argentina. Variation in color, corolla diameter, relative size and proportion of certain floral parts and other traits, are described, as well as the association between these featur...

Color Flower size Phenotypic polymorphisms Traits proportion Intraspecific flower variation was recorded for several Passiflora species growing naturally in different habitats of Argentina. Variation in color, corolla diameter, relative size and proportion of certain floral parts and other traits, are described, as well as the association between these features. Detailed characterization is done for common flowers vs. scarce flowers. In broad terms, less frequent flowers differ from the more abundant ones in their smaller dimensions and in the coloration of some floral pieces. Examples of teratology are also mentioned. The variability was observed among flowers of a single plant, but also between plants, either among a single population or between populations. The existence of different floral morphs may be interesting for plant breeders.
