Ore deposits from Carrizal area, Western Precordillera, Argentina

The Carrizal area is located in the southern part of the Sierra de Volcán, Occidental Precordillera, province of San Juan, Argentina. In there, an extensive alteration zone developed in Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks. The study of the ore minerals allowed identifying two different assemblages...

In there, an extensive alteration zone developed in Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks. The study of the ore minerals allowed identifying two different assemblages. One of them, conformed by pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, sphalerite, melnikovite, tetradimite and Au, is genetically related to the upper part of a porphyry copper type deposit with an age of 283-239 Ma. Thus, it could be correlated to the Andean gondwanic copper mineralization cycle. The other paragenesis, is conformed by rammelsbergite, gersdorffite, pitchblende, pyrite, nickeline and bismuthinite. It is classified as "Ag-Ni-Co-As ± (Bi, U) five elements veins" type deposit with a calculated age of 205 Ma, which was seated under an extensional tectonic regime. In this way, it could be consider that both paragenesis are spatially but not genetically associated.
