Optical systems and spatial frequencies

We analyse the meanings of spatial frequencies when diffraction effects in optical systems illuminated by monochromatic light are described. The field distribution in any plane of the system can always be considered as a Fourier expansion such that each Fourier's component travels in a directio...

The field distribution in any plane of the system can always be considered as a Fourier expansion such that each Fourier's component travels in a direction defined by its spatial frequeny but the suitable choice of this plane depends on the type of sysiem. If the optical system is an image forming one then the object and image are considered as superpositions of Fourier components and each spatial frequency present in the image corresponds to a point in the exit pupil. On the other hand if the optical system contains a diffracting structure then this structure (acting as aperture stop) is considered to be synthesized by Fourier's components and each spatial frequency is related to a point in the spectral plane.
