The response to radiant heat and the estimation of the temperature of distant sources in Triatoma infestans

The response of blood-sucking bugs (Triatoma infestans) to thermal stimulation, in the absence of warm-air gradients or convection currents, was analysed, using windows with different infrared transmittance. When some infrared radiation could reach the insects, they responded as without window. When...

Núñez, J. food seeking thermal orientation Triatominae The response of blood-sucking bugs (Triatoma infestans) to thermal stimulation, in the absence of warm-air gradients or convection currents, was analysed, using windows with different infrared transmittance. When some infrared radiation could reach the insects, they responded as without window. When infrared-opaque windows were used, no response was evoked. Discrimination of the source temperatures was tested using two sources at different temperatures and open-loop conditions. The bugs orientated toward that source that had the temperature of a food source and preferred it to a source at 50°C, in spite of both sources being 10 cm distant. From behavioural evidence we conclude that T. infestans perceives the radiant heat of a warm source and can estimate its temperature at a distance, when seeking for food. © 1989.
