Bermejo foreland basin Mega-fan Mioceno Precordillera A sedimentological and paleoenvironmental study was conducted over the Cuculí Formation at the río Francia creek (San Juan, Argentinian Precordillera). The unit, deposited during Miocene in the Bermejo foreland basin, is mostly composed of brown-grayish fluvial sandstones with frequent intercalations of mudstones that are replaced by polimictic conglomerates towards the top of the profile. The sedimentological analysis allowed the recognition of five facies associations. Facies association 1 represents dune field deposits while facies associations 2, 3, 4 and 5 belong to deposits of a mega-fan. The system shows a general progradational trend, thus facies associations 2, 3, 4 and 5 had been deposited in the middle to distal zone, middle zone, middle to proximal zone and proximal zone, respectively. The analyzed sequence indicates the generation of aeolian levels in its base within a foreland basin with high subsidence rates and semiarid conditions, which are covered by fluvial deposits due to the advance of the fold and thrust belt towards the foreland during the Miocene deformation of the Precordillera, which also generated, as a consequence, the fluvial system progradation. © 2018, Asociacion Geologica Argentina.
