Discovery and interpretation of internal unconformities within the Vinchina Formation (Neogene), La Troya creek, La Rioja, Argentina

Two low-angle erosive surfaces (D1 and D2) associated with lithofacies changes and a petrographical break were identified in the middle part of the Neogene Vinchina Formation at its type locality. These surfaces bound three intervals here named P1, P2 and P3. The oldest (P1) rocks, composed of quart...

These surfaces bound three intervals here named P1, P2 and P3. The oldest (P1) rocks, composed of quartz-rich lithic feldsarenites (with Lm/Lv=0.5), were deposited by anastomosing rivers. These rocks were tilted by 9° to the SW and erosional D1 was formed before deposition of P2 strata. The middle interval (P2) consists of lithic feldsarenites (Lm/Lv=0.2) deposited by gravelly braided rivers. The whole sequence was tilted 4° to the NE and developing D2 unconformity before deposition of P3 strata. The younger interval (P3) comprises quartz-poor feldspathic litharenites (with Lm/Lv=0.2) originated in sandy braided rivers. Finally, the entire Vinchina Formation was tilted 56° to the NW. Synsedimentary tectonic activity is strongly suggested by the geometric relationships and petrographic changes observed among P1, P2 and P3 intervals.
