Coastal hazards Coastal management Geomorphology Land use coastal erosion coastal zone management geomorphological response hazard assessment land use Argentina Information needed for coastal zone management and planning is provided on the basis of research designed to understand better the components and interactions within coastal ecosystems and the interrelationship with the land use and the geological hazards. The present landscape was shaped principally by aeolian, fluvial and marine action, and the resultant landforms were mapped and described in relation to their evolution, both natural and anthropogenic. A morphological coastal model which considered the interrelation between marine and aeolian processes was developed to identify the coastal vulnerability to erosion. Set-back distances, based on historic recession rates, were estimated in order to suggest preventative action that would reduce or eliminate damage to the waterfront. The erosion zone that is estimated to be at risk during the following 100 years varies between 40 m (low erosional rates) and 180 m (high erosional rates). Mapping of land use and natural coastal hazards was undertaken to help plan and regulate use of the studied area in the future. A management framework for mitigating coastal hazards and a recommendation regarding land use also proposed.
