Sumario: | The carbonatic and silicoclastic Saldeño Formation crops-out in the High Andes of Mendoza, about 33° 33′ - 34° 25′ S lat., near the border with Chile. Crustaceans, fishes, gastropods, ostracods and pelecypods are mentioned in the formation for the first time. These fossils provide information that enables a better interpretation of depositational environments in the High Andes during the Late Cretaceous. The low diversity of the fossil content is related to restricted marine conditions. On the basis of the presence of the pollen grains Equisetosporites notensis (Cookson) Romero (first occurence during the Maastrichtian) and Periporopollenites sp. cf. P. polyoratus (Harris) Stover (Campanian-early Oligocene), together with the calcareous nannofossil Arkhangelskiella cymbiformis Vekshina (Campanian-Maastrichtian), the Saldeño Formation is referred to the Maastrichtian. © Asociación Paleontológica Argentina. |
