Among the different classes of explosives trinitrotoluene (TNT) constitutes an important contaminant. It has caused toxicity to exposed workers. As in recent times knowledge was gained that the disposal of TNT produced at the manufacturing plants may generate different degradation products, and additionally be accompanied by some impurities, one of the objectives of this work is to provide the reader with a better knowledge of the adverse interactions with the biological systems, not only of the parent compounds, but also of all TNT associated compounds (TNT-AC), which include impurities and degradation/biotransformation products. It is accepted that TNT and some TNT-AC are toxic and suspect carcinogens. In addition, remediation of TNT contaminated sites constitutes worldwide a problem which awaits a solution. To fulfill this goal there are necessary physical, chemical or biological technologies in addition to a thorough knowledge of the fate and transformation of these compounds in the environment. An additional requirement related to this problem area is the availability of appropriate methods for the ecotoxicological evaluation of a given site or remediation strategy. Fil:Casabé, N.
