Breakout of wells Deformation Geomechanics Tectonics Vaca Muerta formation The break-out is the two-dimensional expression perpendicular to the axis of the well of the current tensional state of the rock developed during its drilling. This two-dimensional expression may not be constant throughout the development of the well since variations due to changes in the tectosedimentary history and rheological response of the different sequences involved may be exhibited. The vertical variation of the orientation of the breakouts can be associated with the superposition of fields of fossil and current stresses with different spatial arrangements. These variations control the best position of the perforations within the Vaca Muerta Formation and could mitigate severe geomechanical consequences related to the loss of sludge, well instability, pipe collapses, reservoir compaction, surface subsidence, sand production, fault reactivation and loss of efficiency of seals. For this reason, its more precise 4D localization of the stress state of the rocks contributes to the most efficient management of these activities. © 2018, Asociacion Geologica Argentina.
