The Cerro Redondo range (3210' S and 6844' W) displays a thick Siluro-Devonian section intruded by Miocene andesitic bodies at the southern margin of this intermontane tectonic basin. The range is crossed by the wide north-west striking, Yalguaraz Shear Zone. Structures of two tectonic cycles were recognized. The older one (Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous) developed a sinistral shear zone under a simple shear regime. Thrust sheets within the shear zone were distorted and segmented by stike-slip faults in lonzenged shape blocks. In the Cerro Redondo range, the second cycle is represented by major divergent strike-slip faults and secondary extensional faults bounding the blocks, and results from divergent (transtensional) simpleshear rejuvenation of the Paleozoic shear zone during late Cenozoic Andean deformation. The location of southern border of the Yalguaraz depression is controlled by this shear zone.
