The dismembered basal ophiolitic sequence from Cordoba province, Argentina

Metamorphosed and folded Precambrian - Paleozoic ultramafic and mafic rocks, exposed in central - west Cordoba Province, define two NNO-SSE to NS belts. Samples were analysed from outcrops on the southern side of the Sierra Grande (Atos Pampa - San Miguel, Los Guanacos, Cerro San Lorenzo and Los Per...

Samples were analysed from outcrops on the southern side of the Sierra Grande (Atos Pampa - San Miguel, Los Guanacos, Cerro San Lorenzo and Los Permanentes bodies) and from the central zone of the Sierra Chica (Bosque Alegre and Alla Gracia bodies). These rocks represent mantle tectonites and transitional basal rocks of an ophiolitic complex which were intruded by ultrabasic and basic consanguineous tholeites and plagiogranitic dykes and by later continental granophyres. The ophiolitic basal section is exposed in conformity with metapelites (gneisses and schists), interlayered metabasalts (amphibolites) and metacarbonatic rocks, which represent the upper ophiolitic crust section. Compatible enrichment elements (Low Field Strenght Elements and Light Rare Earth Elements) and chromospinel compositions suggest crustal contamination and a marginal arc basin. The ophiolite was probably emplaced as a dismembered and metamorphosed complex in a roof arc or suprasubduction zone during the Neoproterozoic subduction. © 1997 Asociaciön Geolögica Argentina. 1997 https://bibliotecadigital.exactas.uba.ar/collection/paper/document/paper_00044822_v52_n3_p275_Mutti http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12110/paper_00044822_v52_n3_p275_Mutti
