Reflexiona brevemente sobre el papel histórico que estas disciplinas han desempeñado en la sociedad, la política y la cultura, su problemática trayectoria —que incluyó episodios de rápida expansión y un importante retroceso (si no ostracismo)—, y su situación actual en términos de desarrollo institucional y agendas de investigación. También profundiza en cómo los científicos sociales latinoamericanos han abordado las dificultades (pero también las potencialidades) de estudiar las estructuras sociales desde una región global periférica y cómo han abordado la clásica tensión entre la participación y el distanciamiento. En este contexto, esta colección especial incluye una serie de artículos que exploran cómo se han estudiado ciertos temas de especial importancia en América Latina: desarrollo y economía mundial; capacidad estatal, administración pública y legitimidad política; y violencia, conflicto y cohesión social. También incluye un grupo de artículos que examinan algunas de las principales tendencias institucionales e intelectuales recientes en las ciencias sociales locales: la profesionalización académica frente al activismo, la expansión de la docencia en los niveles de licenciatura y posgrado y sus efectos en las fronteras disciplinarias, el "provincialismo" (vs. cosmopolitismo) en las publicaciones y los temas de investigación, así como las potencialidades y los riesgos de la adopción de la ciencia abierta, impulsada recientemente por la UNESCO. Si bien sería inútil intentar ofrecer un retrato detallado de una realidad muy diversificada, la variedad de temas abordados en los artículos, así como los diferentes enfoques que guían cada contribución -que van desde descripciones distantes hasta ensayos normativos orientados a la política (y bien informados), desde la “lectura distante” basada en big data hasta la rica reconstrucción sociohistórica-, intentan transmitir algo de la vitalidad y los diversos intereses de las ciencias sociales latinoamericanas. This essay introduces a special collection on the state, potential, and tensions of the social sciences in Latin America. It briefly reflects on the historic role that these disciplines have exerted in society, policy, and culture, their troubled trajectory - which included episodes of rapid expansion and significant retreatment (if not ostracism) -, and their current situation in terms of institutional development and research agendas. It also elaborates on how Latin American social scientists have dealt with the difficulties (but also potentials) of studying social structures from a peripheral global region and how they have dealt with the classic tension between involvement and detachment. Against this backdrop, this special collection includes a series of papers exploring how certain topics of especial importance in Latin America - i.e. development and world economy; state capacity, public administration, and political legitimacy; and violence, conflict, and social cohesion - have been studied. It also features a group of papers examining some of the main recent institutional and intellectual trends within local social sciences: academic professionalization vis-a-vis activism, the expansion of teaching in the under and graduate levels and its effects on disciplinary borders, the “parochialism” (vs. cosmopolitanism) in publishing and research topics, as well as the potentials and risks of the adoption of open science as recently encouraged by UNESCO.
