description This paper seeks to analyze the positions of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) member States through the reform process of the hemispheric defense instruments —especially, the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB)—, as a concomitantly process with the creation of the South American Defense Council (CDS). The study begins with the reform process of the IADB —ended in 2006 with the modifictation of the Statute— to then focus on those initiatives which, from 2008 until 2012, sought to limit the attribution of new functions to the IADB and, at the same time, put into question the relevance of the Inter-American defense system under the current terms of operation. On this basis, the article attempts to illustrate that the South American countries adopted three basic dispositions vis-à-vis the hemispheric security instruments: support, resistance and accommodation.
