The Quinto river basin has the strategic natural resources for the development of
the province of San Luis.
With an area of 1.120.780 hectares and located northeast of the province of San Luis, it
is the only provider of fresh water for the most populated human settlements and
supplies input to the most productive economic activities.
However, lately it has been impacted by the advance of the agricultural frontier
producing a variation in land use over time.
In this context and given the lack of updated information, this study aimed to generate
detailed cartographic information on the variation of land uses in the Quinto river basin
in the years 2009 and 2019, as a base contribution for a territorial planning in the water
basins of the province of San Luis.
Landsat 5 and Oli 8 satellite images, plus the contribution of geographic information
systems, were the geo-technological support that allowed the digital processing of
information, which together with the knowledge of the area, a supervised classification
could be applied.
Classes were defined that responded to the use of agricultural, mixed (agricultural -
livestock), urban, mining, natural vegetation and water.
As a corollary, it is concluded that the approach to the study at the water basin level is
unprecedented for the province.
The multitemporal analysis shows that land uses did not change in the 10 years, but the
variation of surface area by each class directly influences the other uses.
One of the most relevant results is that of natural vegetation. This class has varied, with
an apparent tendency to remain in some sectors and in others to decrease. Regarding
the variation in the surface of the use of water, it is reflected that the environmental
conditions of the area require the generation of public policies that tend to build a
reservoir for a freshwater reservoir. |
