Sumario:In the field of tourism, different modalities and activities that make up tourism practice are often used. Among them, rural tourism appears as an umbrella concept that brings together multiple sub-modalities, all linked to rural areas as a setting for development. These practices involve diverse communities, dynamics, and elements that shape and recreate local heritage, integrating into a specific landscape and territory. The promotion of rural areas, their landscapes, heritage, and ways of life through rural tourism requires detailed knowledge of their characteristics, differences, and theoretical-conceptual relationships, so that their implementation and/or materialization is consistent in practice. On this basis, the objective of this research article is to present the current state of the art on the notion of rural tourism, interpreting the connections between the different associated concepts. To this end, a qualitative methodology is used, based on a critical analysis of the literature available in open access databases. The final reflections underscore the importance of accurately understanding each conceptual category and the territorial dimension they occupy, which would allow for more effective management in practice.
