In this work, as in others, Roa Bastos dramatizes the tension between written and oral tradition (represented in Paraguay by Spanish and Guaraní, respectively), proposing a necessarily syncretic Paraguayan mythology, centered around the figure of Gaspar Mora, a fictional carver and leper who raises the wooden Christ of Itapé. En su literatura, Augusto Roa Bastos exploró, en más de una ocasión, diversas formas de narrar la conflictiva historia del Paraguay. La novela Hijo de hombre, publicada originalmente en 1960 y reescrita para la década de los 80, forma parte, junto con Yo el supremo y El fiscal, de una trilogía que reconstruye una genealogía del poder en la tierra natal del autor. En esta obra, como en las otras, Roa Bastos dramatiza la polémica entre la tradición escrita y la tradición oral (representadas en Paraguay por el castellano y el guaraní, respectivamente), proponiendo una mitología paraguaya –necesariamente sincrética– que tiene como eje a la figura de Gaspar Mora, tallador y leproso ficcional que levanta al Cristo de madera de Itapé Universidad Nacional del Nordeste.
