Cycles of Macrocystis pyrifera forest in Bahia Camarones, Chubut, Argentine

Three successive cycles of Macrocystis pyrifera forest were studied over a 48-month period (May 1975–April 1979). Each cycle consisted of a juvenile phase, an equilibrium phase, and a senescence phase. For each plant, total and harvestable weight, length, and the number of stipes at the plant base a...

Boraso de Zaixso, Alicia L. Three successive cycles of Macrocystis pyrifera forest were studied over a 48-month period (May 1975–April 1979). Each cycle consisted of a juvenile phase, an equilibrium phase, and a senescence phase. For each plant, total and harvestable weight, length, and the number of stipes at the plant base and canopy were measured. Forest density was assessed, and indices were developed to indicate senescence and the relationship between canopy and base. A method is proposed to make the results independent of tidal factors and depth. Total biomass ranged from 0.58 kg/plant to 7.39 kg/plant; harvestable biomass ranged from no harvestable portion available to 3.12 kg/plant. The mean biomass was 8.42 kg/m² (95% confidence limits: 0.68–16.10 kg/m²) for whole plants, and 1.81 kg/m² (0.67–3.05 kg/m²) for the harvestable portion. The biological significance of the different parameters is discussed, and comparisons are made with other populations.
