Preliminary study of the benthic meiofauna in polluted sections of Rodríguez and Carnaval streams (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina)

This work deals with the benthic meiofauna of Rodríguez and Carnaval streams, both of them being tributaries of the Río de la Plata. Two parameters were used to measure the effects of pollution on bottom-dwelling organisms: the most probable number of total coliforms (M.P.N., Standard Methods, 1971)...

This work deals with the benthic meiofauna of Rodríguez and Carnaval streams, both of them being tributaries of the Río de la Plata. Two parameters were used to measure the effects of pollution on bottom-dwelling organisms: the most probable number of total coliforms (M.P.N., Standard Methods, 1971) and the diversity index proposed by Shannon & Weaver (1963). A gradient of decreasing diversity was noticeable from the first sampling station—where polluting agents were loaded—to the last one, where recovery occurred as total coliforms decreased. This fact allowed us to characterize each area. Furthermore, the relative abundance of the different species at each section placed them into three different categories, as suggested by Mackenthum (1966): sensitive, intermediate-tolerant, and tolerant.
