Sumario:This paper discusses a series of theoretical-methodological tools for discourse analysis to approach the symbolic dimension of urban processes, considering my own research experience, to explain the analytical proposal put into practice in several research, systematize the approaches proposed for each object of study and to summarize most important findings of each case. The article discusses three research lines about the symbolic dimension of the urban space: a) the conceptualizations and representations of the city produced from spaces of power and institutions (the conceived space); b) the discursive framework of urban policies; and c) the various conceptions of the urban, the city and its uses that come into conflict when the conceived space and the lived space are stressed. It is shown that discourse analysis —as a complement to other approaches— is a powerful tool to study the production processes of urban space.
