Sumario:This article carries out a comparative analysis between the religious festivals of Santo Amaro de Campos, located in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, and Pirenópolis in Goiás. Theoretically, we examine these festivals as expressions of cultural anthropophagy, framed as a decolonial practice, and as manifestations of neomedievalism. We hypothesize that the cavalhadas represent a redefinition of the Middle Ages within the Brazilian context, resulting in carnivalesque and hyperbolic cultural and religious expressions that should not be viewed merely as medieval heritage but rather as unique to Brazilian culture. Finally, it is shown how, in the case of the two religious festivals, the understanding of these cultural phenomena is only possible if their socio-cultural context is taken into account.
