Sumario:This study focused on the plain basin of the Santa María stream, located in the north-central region of Corrientes Province, Argentina. The primary objective was to assess and categorize soil degradation through the quantitative estimation of potential (Ap) and actual (A) water erosion, utilizing a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. Twenty-one sites were selected based on soil types, land use, and management practices. A correlation analysis was performed among soil erodibility factors (K), slope length (L), and slope steepness (S) with Ap. The results indicated that K values accounted for 73% of the variation in Ap, while slope length and steepness explained 54%. The analysis revealed that 65.96% of the basin’s area (42,161.9 ha) was classified as having moderately low erosion potential, with estimated soil losses ranging from 20 to 50 Mg·ha⁻¹·yr⁻¹. Additionally, the assessment of actual soil loss due to water erosion showed that 79% of the Santa María basin experienced very low soil losses, measuring less than 10 Mg·ha⁻¹·yr⁻¹.
