This undesirable outcome stems from a regulatory framework that inadvertently promotes malpractices. This article aims to lay the groundwork for a regulatory enhancement proposal by advocating the adoption of international standards as primary instruments. Leveraging their systematic, reliable, and adaptable nature across diverse national contexts, these standards advocate key elements for effective regulation. These include ensuring compelling message content, establishing objective assignment criteria, fostering regulatory autonomy, promoting transparency, enabling administrative and judicial oversight, and incentivizing media pluralism. By embracing these international benchmarks, the proposed regulatory improvements aspire to rectify the current shortcomings and pave the way for a more robust and ethical landscape in official advertising regulation. La publicidad oficial en México, aparentemente establecida con fines legítimos, paradójicamente ha evolucionado hastaconvertirse en un mecanismo que fomenta el control de los medios y la sumisión a los intereses gubernamentales. Este resultadoindeseable surge de un marco regulatorio que inadvertidamente promueve malas prácticas. Este artículo tiene como objetivosentar las bases para una propuesta de mejora regulatoria abogando por la adopción de estándares internacionales como instrumentos primarios. Aprovechando su naturaleza sistemática, confiable y adaptable en diversos contextos nacionales, estos estándares defienden elementos clave para una regulación efectiva. Estos incluyen garantizar un contenido de mensajes convincente, establecer criterios de asignación objetivos, fomentar la autonomía regulatoria, promover la transparencia, permitir la supervisión administrativa y judicial e incentivar el pluralismo de los medios. Al adoptar estos puntos de referencia internacionales, las mejoras regulatorias propuestas aspiran a rectificar las deficiencias actuales y allanar el camino para un panorama más sólido y ético en la regulación de la publicidad oficial.
