| Sumario: | Plant and fungal materials used by birds in nest building are described. Twenty nests belonging to ten species and four families collected in northeastern Argentina and some localities of Paraguay were analyzed. The plant and fungal (Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes. lichenized) materials were classified into three group: filamentous, cottony and flaky. The nests of Hylocharis chrysura (Trochilidae), Tolmomyias sulphurescens, Elaenia flavogaster. E. spectabilis, Suiriri suiriri y Pachyramphus validas (Tyrannidae) were especially built with Ascomycetes lichenized. Fungal rizomorphs were utilized by T. sulphurescens and Cacicus chrysopterus (Icteridae). Pitangus sulphuratus (Tyrannidae), Turdus amaurochalinus (Muscicapidae) and Cacicus solitarius (Icteridae) used plant materials. The nests and details of prevalent building materials are íllustrated. |
