Sumario:In the popular imagination, Chaco is associated with forest exploitation, but this was not developed throughout the territory with the same intensity; One of those secondary spaces has been the current Libertador General José de San Martín department; this article describes the forestry activities carried out, focusing on what happened in the present century, but without forgetting the historical context that explains it. The work analyzes characteristics of the native forests, the implementation of the Territorial Planning of Native Forests in the department, forestry activity over time, wood production by main products, the change in soil use, land tenure, industrialization of forest products and institutions linked to forestry activity. Reflecting on the environmental and social consequences of the destruction of the forest, sustainable management proposals made are analyzed.
