| Sumario: | The aim of this research is to study the structure of the “tolas” complex in the Province of Jujuy. Fieldwork was carried out in the cities of Abra Pampa, Humahuaca and San Salvador de Jujuy, specifically in household context, markets and fairs. Qualitative ethnobotanical methodology , such as participant observation and open and semi-structured interviews, was used to inquiring about local knowledge on the plant(s) recognised locally as tola, its current use, any users, sites of access, ways to obtain them, parts used, and harvesting times. Complementarily, a literature search was carried out for articles in ethnobotany and related disciplines. Plant material was obtained and conditioned for taxonomic identification. Results show that this complex consists of 14 species originating from the Puna, Altoandina and Prepuna phytogeographical provinces, known locally as “tola” or variants of this name, which share the name based on the attributes of their morphology, aromaticity and diverse uses. The presence of a subcomplex under the local name “koa”-“koba” is proposed. It is important to recognise plant complexes and identify their components for a better understanding of local view of nature. |
